- Title
MEJILLONES: Centinelas de la contaminación marina.
- Authors
Echeandía, Juan Santos; Rodríguez, Patricia Bernárdez
- Abstract
The article highlights the importance of mussels as indicators of marine pollution. These mollusks have the ability to accumulate dissolved contaminants in the water in their tissues over time, becoming guardians of marine pollution. In the United States, the "Mussel Watch" program has been using mussels to monitor marine pollution since 1976. In Spain, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography has been carrying out a similar program since 1991, collecting mussel samples at 71 points along the coast. Mussels undergo a purification and quality control process before reaching the consumer.
