- Abstract
This article is an obituary for Robert Ewan Fordyce, a renowned paleontologist and marine mammal researcher. Fordyce was born in New Zealand in 1953 and had a deep fascination with the natural world from a young age. He completed his undergraduate and PhD degrees at the University of Canterbury and went on to hold various research positions at institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Otago. Fordyce made significant contributions to the study of marine mammal evolution, particularly in the areas of baleen whales, river dolphins, and penguins. He authored numerous publications and was highly regarded for his meticulous work and clear anatomical descriptions. Fordyce's research had a global impact and he received several honors and awards for his contributions to the field. He was also known for his passion for nature photography and his love for New Zealand's native flora and fauna. Fordyce is survived by his wife and two children.
