- Abstract
The article examines the results of community interviews concerning the status of the dugong in the Gulf of Mannar waters off Sri Lanka and India. The survey aims to determine if the dugong population in the area still persists and identify threats, conservation prospects and management options. The data gathered are considered useful in advocating conservation action and creating a baseline for further quantitative surveys. The questionnaire of the survey concentrated on the historical and present occurrence of the mammal, threats and attitudes toward dugong conservation.
