- Abstract
This study was undertaken to clarify a detailed description of waste generation and characteristic to estimate the recycling and composting potential as well as the financial benefit from hotel sector as the basic information for 3Rs promotion in Hue city, Vietnam. The authors conducted a waste generation survey and a waste composition survey for 45 hotels by 6 hotel classes for 10 consecutive days. The waste generation rates by hotel class, number of room and number of bed were analyzed in three waste categories: general waste, recyclable, and food residues. The general waste was collected and classified into 10 physical categories and 77 subcategories. By multiplying the waste generation rate by room by the total number of hotels/guesthouses in Hue, the authors estimated the total waste generation amount was 6,750 kg/day, in which the 4-star hotel accounted for largest amount (1,845 kg/day), followed by 3-star hotel (1,103 kg), 5-star hotel (1,031 kg), 1-star hotel (869 kg/day), 2-star hotel (826 kg/day) and guest house accounted for smallest part with 516 (kg/day). In general waste, the recycling potential comprised 12.6%, composting potential accounted for 32.3%, and the remaining waste accounted for only 14.2%. This result indicates that waste generation in hotels has high potential up to 66.8% of total for composting and livestock feeding. The recycling and composting could be prevented the large amount that sent to the landfill site from 59.1% to 14.2%.
