- Abstract
The article examines the meaning of the term "realism" in various philosophical contexts. It argues that certain epistemological theses should not be considered part of realism. The text emphasizes the diversity of different types of realism and non-realistic counterpositions such as nominalism, conceptualism, and idealism. It also discusses whether epistemic optimism should be included in the definition of realism. The article addresses scientific and theological realism and their possible relationships to each other. It emphasizes that everyday realism is an integral part of common sense and points to the independence of the world from our consciousness. Theological realism is considered a specific form of religious cognitivism in which theological statements can have propositional content. It discusses whether this content is descriptive or normative and whether it relates to facts or moral theses. The article discusses various positions in the theological realism debate and highlights the importance of metaphors in religious language usage. It argues that epistemological elements should not be included in the formulation of realism. It also points out that theological realism ultimately makes atheism, agnosticism, and religious doubt understandable. However, it is doubted whether such an assumption can be justified given the religious diversity and partial incompatibility of the teachings of different religions.
