- Abstract
Since Max Weber, a sociologist, proposed that both academics and politics are spiritual vocations, more and more attention has been paid to the vocation image of teachers by scholars. Teaching and educating people is a teacher's duty, and it is a fundamental, basic and critical cause which is related to the fate of the country. However, the vocation image of teaching and educating people is currently facing many difficulties: firstly, teacher worship science and technology excessively and lose due respect for the humanistic spirit; secondly, teachers lack autonomy; thirdly, teachers lack a sufficient and high-quality leisure life. Emmanuel Levinas's theory of heterophenomenology provides us with the important enlightenment for a deeper understanding of teachers' image of teaching and educating people. Like phenomenologist, we should go to teachers, get close to teachers, understand teachers, suspend prejudices, leave them open without discussing, know them without mentioning, observe them without being critical and utilizing, and transcendentally, essentially, simply and purely return to the "reality" itself of teachers' image without any "foresight", such as preexistence, foresight, and presupposition. Only teaching and educating people is teachers' duty, responsibility and vocation, and everything else is external to the teacher.
