- Abstract
This article proposes a new theoretical approach to analyze high-risk militancy. It argues that, in addition to Doug McAdam’s original idea of biographical availability, it is necessary to integrate three analytical perspectives: what here is called high-risk repertoire; an analysis of mobilization structures; and a more precise understanding of time, for which is proposed the concept of a high-risk situation. This new theoretical approach is put to the test in the microanalysis of the life trajectories of four militants in Guatemala City from 1980 to 1985. The high-risk perspective is used here to understand a dimension of enforced disappearance, focused on the militants, their contexts, and their reasons for remaining despite the high risk.
