- Abstract
This article describes and explains the underrepresentation of women in ministerial cabinets during the period 1979–2015 in Ecuador. Using an unpublished database and linear regression model, the article shows that the increasing number of legislators and size of the government legislative bloc had a positive effect on the presence of women ministers. In addition, the article discusses the political importance of the ministries assigned to women during the period. The main empirical finding is that, despite the drastic increase in women ministers during Rafael Correa’s government, the tendency to appoint women to ministries of low political importance ministries has been constant during the previous Ecuadorian democratic regime.
