- Title
The Connection between Cavour and Calvinism.
- Authors
Palombaro, Ottavio
- Abstract
The article examines the influence of the Swiss Reformed tradition of Calvinism on the political views of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, the first Italian prime minister. Cavour's upbringing in a Calvinist family and exposure to Protestant liberalism shaped his belief in individual freedom and the separation of church and state. The author argues that understanding these religious influences is crucial for understanding the ideological foundations of the Italian modern state. Cavour's formulation of a "free church in a free state" represented a compromise that aimed to establish a basis for the newly formed Italian state.
