- Authors
Whiteford, Peter; Adema, Willem
- Abstract
The article discusses the effects of the parents' working status on child poverty. It has been found that child poverty rates are significantly higher for jobless families than for families with at least one parent in employment. It is essential for the successful anti-poverty strategies to seek a balanced approach that combines an improved benefit and improved incentives to work. It is also essential for a certain country to have an adequate tax and benefit systems to reduce such problems. Countries with very low levels of child poverty have relatively low levels of joblessness and relatively low market income poverty, as well as tax and transfer systems that are very effective at reducing such poverty.
