- Title
Reception of the Holocaust in the German Democratic Republic: A Philatelic Commentary.
- Authors
Di Napoli, Thomas
- Abstract
The article investigates the response of the Jewish Holocaust in Germany. The differences in attitudes and responses to the Holocaust in East and West Germany, holocaust writings, the official position of the government on the Holocaust and, specifically, the stamps issued by the government on the Holocaust are explored. Concluding, that Holocaust-related stamps of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) are intended by that government to convey far more than mere postage, they are intentionally used as attractive vehicles to convey ideas and attitudes central to the internal and foreign policy of the GDR. As such they provide perfect evidence for the logical-though perhaps unexpected, reception of the Holocaust in East Germany.
