Somatic Style.
- Authors
SHUSTERMAN, RICHARD
- Abstract
The article discusses the aesthetics of style and its somatic origins. The etymological roots of the word style refer to Roman inscriptions, but the word style has moved away from the physical act of creating an inscription to a loftier ideal of aesthetics. The author Ralph Waldo Emerson and his ideas on style are compared to those of the author Henry David Thoreau. The philosophical aspects of style are considered as are the ideas of the philosophers William James and G. E. Moore. Other topics include Confucianism, styles of art, popular uses of the word style to describe someone's behavior, and the senses.
