Conceiving Musical Transdialection.
- Authors
BEAUDOIN, RICHARD; MOORE, JOSEPH
- Abstract
The article considers musical transcription and how it can change a piece of music from what the author conceived it as to how it is interpreted and performed by other composers. Of particular interest is transdialection, which is the interpretation of a work of music into another "musical dialect." Different meanings for the concept of musical transcription are considered including notational transcription, ethnomusicological transcription, and musical transcription. This last is considered to be a form of musical borrowing. Five transcripts that were made during the 20th century of works by the composer Johann Sebastian Bach are analyzed including one by composers Ferruccio Busoni, Anton Webern, and Igor Stravinsky.
