- Abstract
The article introduces the November 1, 1999 issue of the journal IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE). A tribute has been honored to John D. Gannon who was an editor in chief of TSE and died on June 12, 1999. Besides being an editor Gannon was a professor and chairman of the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland. Research areas of Gannon were specification, analysis and testing of software. His thesis research was a study of the efficacy of typing in programming languages. Teaching was his lifelong avocation. He loved to work with students at all levels. He designed courses using three distinct approaches to computing. In the 1970s, Maryland first tried an only code matters approach and its curriculum was founded on teaching the best coding techniques using the local SIMPL language. The John D. Gannon Scholarship Fund commemorates Gannon's commitment to students and education at the University of Maryland.
