- Abstract
Intestinal parasitosis are a global health problem that represent a marker of socio-cultural backwardness and it represent an index of fecal contamination of the environment. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in inhabitants of the rural community "Angosturita" in Bolívar state, Venezuela. The fecal samples were analyzed by direct examination, Kato, Willis and spontaneous sedimentation. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was 90%. According to age, the highest percentage of parasites was found in the 0-9 years group with 60%, but without statistically significant differences (χ² (Yates correction) = 4.44 d.f.. = 6 p> 0.05). Both genders were affected equally (p> 0.05). 10 taxa of pathogenic and commensal parasites were identified, the most prevalent being the chromist Blastocystis spp. with 70%; two cases of Balantioides coli (6,7%) (formerly Balantidium coli) were also found in this group. Among the protozoa, Entamoeba coli stood out with 43.3% and among the helminths Trichuris trichiura was the most common with 63.3%. In conclusion, a high prevalence of intestinal parasites (90%) was determined in the rural community "Angosturita" in Bolívar state, which is a consequence of the poor social and sanitary conditions and environmental sanitation in that community.
