- Abstract
This study deals with the barracks-house built for the Spanish ambassador in Portugal, the Count of Maceda, in 1757, through in-depth analysis of the diplomatic correspondence and a hitherto unpublished architectural design that has been found in the General Archive of Simancas. Attention is also focused on a comparative study on the location of other Hispanic Monarchy ambassadors' temporary residences in mid-18th century Lisbon. This article unites previously unseen documents concerning the Spanish embassies at the Portuguese court during the reign of Ferdinand VI (1746-1759), and also sheds new light on the Spanish presence in the capital city before and after the 1755 earthquake.
