- Abstract
In this review our objective was to investigate the use of virtual reality as a novel approach for mitigating anxiety among children in the context of dental office visits. We conducted a bibliometric analysis on the research publications retrieved from PubMed (Medline) database, using VOSviewer software, followed by a detailed review of relevant articles. Out of the 63 publications in English, 20 were clinical studies, most of them RCT's, 19 of which exclusively included children and adolescents. A growing interest in the use of VR was observed since the first relevant study was published, in 2000. The findings indicate that virtual reality possesses the capability to enhance the dental experience for children by means of distraction and transposition into enjoyable virtual settings, thereby diminishing the perception of discomfort and anxiety. Notable benefits encompass a marked decrease in heart rate and enhanced cooperation with the dentist, though the alleviation of anxiety is not consistently significant in statistical terms. VR allows for the personalization of the experience according to individual patient preferences and can also serve as an educational tool. Nevertheless, challenges arise from the diversity of studies regarding clinical protocols, the equipment utilized, and the measurement of anxiety, which hinders the ability to conduct a standardized evaluation of effectiveness. In addition, integrating VR into current practice requires initial investments and considerations regarding equipment hygiene. In conclusion, virtual reality offers a promising direction for reducing children's anxiety during dental treatments, but further research is needed to optimize its use and standardize treatment protocols.
