- Abstract
The article focuses on a study conducted in Italy, which examined neurological abnormalities in pre-term infants who were born after premature rupture of membranes (PROM). The study, which was conducted by researcher A. Spinillo and colleagues, was published in the "British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology." In infants who were born in Italy between 1986-1991 during 24-34 weeks gestation, it was found that there was no significant difference of neonatal morbidity between 140 infants who were born 12 or more hours after membrane rupture and 120 infants born with intact membranes or born within 12 hours of rupture. Those infants who belonged to the PROM group were found to be five times more prone to be neurologically impaired than others.
