- Title
Cocaine as a Fetal Hazard.
- Authors
Handler, A.; McCalla, S.
- Abstract
The article focuses on two large-scale studies, which have confirmed that women who use cocaine during pregnancy place their fetus at increased risk of a host of problems, ranging from premature delivery and low birth weight to low Apgar scores. One study involving more than 17,000 births in the Chicago area found that two percent of births were to women who admitted using cocaine or who were identified as users through urine toxicology screening. The second study involved 1,111 women whose urine specimens were anonymously tested for drug metabolites, as well as a subgroup of 846 women for whom linked health data were available for their infants. Results showed that nearly 12 percent of the women had used cocaine during pregnancy and that cocaine users were about one-sixth less likely than other women to have received prenatal care.
