- Abstract
During John Dowland’s lifetime the lute changed from six courses to at least nine courses, and right-hand technique from ‘thumb-inside’ to ‘thumb-outside’; musical style would have changed alongside with these technical developments. A Preludium by Dowland from the Board Lutebook is examined from the point of view of changes in right-hand technique and the new fashions in ornamentation. Tempo and other issues are also considered, in order to find the ‘spirit of Dowland’.
