- Abstract
University libraries in the Dominican Republic are transforming itself and information and communication technologies (ICT) are enabling its students to project somehow their personal autonomy and identity through access to the Internet and tools available in the social web. These centers are further characterized by receiving a high percentage of foreign students, mostly from the Republic of Haiti, so the needs of access, information and communication are essential to ensure adequate levels in their education and learning. ICTs lead not only to changes in professional roles, but in the form that information is accessed and consumed. Libraries can assume different functions depending on the relationship that they project with the use of technology. In this sense interactive libraries will promote a dynamic environment and will help its students connect with tools that facilitate them, among other things, to communicate, interact, learn, investigate and have fun. The challenge will be in the planning of strategic user training programs to overcome the inequalities produced by the digital gap and ensure universal access to information.
