- Abstract
This study aims to examine social work education provided by public universities in Malaysia. The provision of a sound curriculum is necessary for the social work profession in Malaysia. This situation follows the implementation of the Social Work Act, it is necessary to produce social workers who are skilled and knowledgeable in practice. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is one of the bodies that regulates the social work curriculum in western countries. Therefore, it is also necessary for the social work curriculum in Malaysia to refer to the body so that the social work curriculum in Malaysia is in line with western countries which each year produce graduates who are competent in practice. There are 10 basic social work curricula that have been identified namely social work as a professional, principles of social work ethic, client diversity, social and economic justice, critical thinking, human and environmental behavior, social policy and welfare, social work practice, research and industrial training. The instrument of this study was self-constructed by the researcher based on the components of the basic social work curriculum standards set by the CSWE. This study uses a quantitative approach through survey method and uses a questionnaire as data collection. The study involved a total of 279 final year students who were purposefully selected in six public universities that offer social work education programs in Malaysia. The information obtained was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. The information of the study findings was presented in the form of distributions and percentages. The results of this study can give implications to a more effective social work education curriculum to produce social workers who are competent in delivering social work services and further improve the social work profession as a professional profession in Malaysia.
