- Title
Raphael the Liar: Angelic Deceit and Testing in the Book of Tobit.
- Authors
Miller, Geoffrey D.
- Abstract
A critique is presented on the apocryphal Old Testament Book of Tobit, focusing on lies told by the angel Raphael while impersonating a human Israelite related to Tobit. The author analyzes the moral issues of an angelic being who is dishonest, and argues that deceit was justified to test Tobit's faith as a Jew and his responsibilities as a father. Biblical exegesis, the First Book of Kings, and symbolism in the Bible are discussed.
