- Abstract
The Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica in Amsterdam preserves a manuscript of the Explicatie op het Cantica Canticorum by Pseudo-Richard of St Victor, completed in 1415 (MS BPH 202). The Amsterdam surgeon master Gerrit Willemsz. donated the book to the neighbouring convent of St Margaret. Gerrit and his parents were major benefactors of spiritual institutions in early fifteenth-century Amsterdam. St Margaret's inherited more books, all supposedly lost. BPH 202 is a manuscript produced in the eastern Netherlands, possibly in Windesheim. It shows so much similarity with MS 65-33 (Amsterdam UL, Special Collections) from 1418 that both may go back to the same model and are thus a testimony to a 'standard edition'.
