- Abstract
Background: There are various mobile health apps (mHealth) for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) available. However, these apps are used to a limited extent in current diabetes care. The aim of this study is to investigate the attitude, barriers and technical qualifications of primary care providers regarding mHealth for patients with T2DM. Method: In a qualitative descriptive study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with primary care providers (n = 12). The topic list used was based on the Enhanced Technology Acceptance Model and V-model. Data were analyzed through a thematic analysis (using a deductive approach) with ATLAS.ti9. Results: The most frequently patient-related barriers mentioned by primary care providers are a higher age of patients (> 65 years), the lack of digital skills and a lack of motivation and knowledge among patients with T2DM. Professional-related barriers were: poor/missing link with the general practitioner information system and limited time to delve into mHealth themselves. In case primary care providers are trained, they believe they have sufficient technology qualifications to tell and instruct patients with T2DM about mobile health apps. Primary care providers lack information to find reliable apps and work with apps safely and skillfully. Conclusion: Primary care providers generally have a positive attitude towards mHealth. However, in order to integrate mHealth into current diabetes care, efforts must be made to develop technology qualifications of professionals. Furthermore, primary care providers need to be facilitated in time to delve into mHealth and the link between mHealth and existing information systems needs attention.
