- Abstract
In the work of the French filmmaker François Ozon (1967), character-narrators are recurrent. Whether they are writers, like the main characters of Angel (2007), Swimming Pool (2003) and In the House (Dans la maison, 2012), or just narrators of their own --true or invented-- memories, as in Frantz (2016), Double Lover (L'amant double, 2017) or By the Grace of God (Grâce à Dieu, 2018). The characters frequently rewrite their stories by telling their memories to other characters with the complicity of a filmic enunciation that conceals how they intentionally intervene in the memory. The reliability of the enunciation is constantly called into question. The entangled relation between the different narrative levels and the use of metafiction leads to a certain complex narrative. In this article we aim to explore how this unstable narration intertwines with the figure of the character-narrator and eventually conveys the desire of the same character. Methodologically, we draw on textual analysis rooted in semiotics.
