- Abstract
100 years ago, the German Foreign Minister Walther Rathenau became the victim of an assassination attempt. Rathenau symbolized the political order of Germany after World War I. He was murdered by right-wing extremists because, as a Jew, he was seen as too understanding towards the West. The assassination was carried out by Erwin Kern and Hermann Fischer, who were later captured and partially shot. The assassination led to riots in the Berlin Reichstag, but the German population remained calm and there was no mass uprising against the system.
