- Abstract
Reye's syndrome is a grave reaction of Children to certain viral infection. It is a deadly disease, strikes swiftly and can attack any child, teen or adult without warning. All the body organs are affected with the liver and brain suffering most seriously. Reyes syndrome should be suspected with symptoms appear during or most commonly, after a viral illness, such as flu or chicken pox and salicylates. Reye's syndrome is non-contagious, and too often is misdiagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, diabetes, poisoning, drug overdose or sudden infant death. Liver function tests (SGOT, (SAT) SGPT, (ACT)) can be done to determine the possibility of Reyes syndrome. There is 90% chance of recovery when the syndrome is treated in its earliest stage. This review focuses on the causes, sign and symptoms, treatment and awareness in early detection and educates the public and medical communities about the risk involved in the syndrome, especially with the children.
