Wild number sense in brood parasitic Brown-headed Cowbirds.
- Authors
LOW, JASON; BURNS, KEVIN C.; HAUBER, MARK E.
- Abstract
In this article, the authors discuss a study by David J. White and colleagues which reports that cowbirds make egg-laying decisions based on changes in egg numbers in the nests of potential hosts. The author assert that the implications of the study are important for brood parasite biology, as female cowbirds face a conundrum. They add that the study suggests that brood parasites can count host chicks before they hatch.
