- Abstract
The article focuses on the foundation of Congaree National Park on October 18, 1976 and its historic value in South Carolina. It discusses the wilderness advocacies through various legislations and public awareness to preserve the Congaree Swamp which includes Wilderness Act, Congaree Action Now rally, and journal publications. It mentions on the ecological and historical importance expressed by advocacy proponents pointing on Revolutionary War history representation, last largest hardwood forest remnant, and less impact of hunting or fishing. It relates that opponents to preservation counteracted with the Swamps productivity, economic benefits of logging, and preservation cost. It also highlights the evolution of research and resource management plans for the national park.
