- Abstract
The article provides a biography of Jewish theater producer and playwright David Belasco during the first thirty years of his life. Belasco's parents emigrated from England to California during the mid-19th century Gold Rush there. The producer would state that his father's mining experiences in California and British Columbia would come to influence his plays. He premiered his first play, "Jim Black," at the age of 12, and would eventually become a popular stage manager and director.
