- Abstract
The article focuses on John Jones, the first Jewish president of the Los Angeles City Council. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Jones came to the U.S. sometime in 1849 with his wife and two children. They moved to San Francisco, California where he established a wholesale grocery business. He moved his business to Los Angeles, California in 1853 but returned to San Francisco after two years. Jones joined the Congregation Sherith Israel and his application was approved on October 5, 1856. He became the vice president of Sherith Israel after four months. Jones converted to Judaism on April 7, 1858. The author highlighted Jones' service as a Los Angeles City Councilman. He was elected as its president on December 13, 1870. He died on December 28, 1876.
