- Abstract
This paper examines the pattern and degree of integration of black athletes from the USA and French/Canadian athletes from Canada into the Olympic teams of their respective countries. A number of theoretical propositions regarding integration are examined for their "fit" with the actual pattern of Olympic team participation manifested in these two countries. Changes over time are examined by analyzing the composition of teams chosen by their countries for the 1936. 1960 and 1980 Games. Minorities are identified through photographs in Olympic year books (USA) and through name/ethnic derivation (Canada). The findings lead to some interesting speculations regarding the root causes of the disproportionate representation of minorities on the teams of these nations.
