- Title
Law, War, and Casuistry in Vattel's Jus Gentium.
- Authors
Hunter, Ian
- Abstract
The author discusses how 18th-century Swiss philosopher Emer de Vattel's book "Law of Nations" supplied the principles for international justice among a society of countries. The book's interpretation as an instrumental defense of reason of state and national self-interest is addressed. The author also argues that assumptions about the law of nations or "jus gentium" being a discourse based on philosophical principles adversely affect the understanding of Vattel's work.
