- Title
AMERICA'S FOUNDING EDITORS: WRITING THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.
- Authors
ABRAMS, DOUGLAS E.
- Abstract
The author encourages legal writers to balance pride of authorship and personal humility that welcomes editing by others, citing the case of then Virginia lawyer Thomas Jefferson whose ingratitude kept him from crediting the U.S. Congress for editing the Declaration of Independence. It details the development of the Declaration from draft to finality, the changes made by Congress to enhance the Declaration, and the Declaration's reputation as an eternal statement of national aspirations.
