- Abstract
This article discusses the relationship between debt and labor, highlighting how workers are often forced to take on debt to cover necessary expenses when labor conditions are weak and unionization is low. The burden of heavy interest loans acts as a regressive pay cut, forcing workers to take on more hours and low-paying jobs just to keep up with debt payments. Debt can also suppress strikes, as personal debt offsets the increase in strike activity caused by inflation. The article argues that the labor movement needs a coherent debt analysis and collective strategies to fight for debt cancellation. It emphasizes the importance of incorporating debt analysis and discussions into union strategies to strengthen the labor movement. The article also mentions the August 2023 strike by members of the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA, with a photograph depicting labor leader Sara Nelson speaking on the picket line in New York. The strike was a response to unresolved issues and demands within the entertainment industry.
