- Abstract
Introduction: Teat disinfection is one of the most important steps in the prophylaxis of mastitis. Its aim is to reduce the infections of mammary gland directly after milking. The widespread use of milking machines requires thorough cleaning and disinfection of milking equipment components. Health of mammary gland and milk quality depends on these operations. Aim of study: The aim of this study was the determination of the antifungal activity of disinfectants against yeast of Candida genus isolated from mastitis in cows. Material and methods:The yeast-like fungi strains isolated from infected bovine mammary glands were examined. The mean minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of disinfectants against yeast-like fungi were investigated using agar dilution method on YNB medium (Dom Handlowy Nauki PAN, Kraków). Results: The lowest concentration inhibiting growth of fungi of the genus Candida (in mg/I) showed the following disinfectants (respectively the arithmetic mean, geometric mean and median): Virkon(1 12.7 1,87.37, 100), Disinfectant(187.97, 183.18, 200), Alkalit (445.45, 425.27, 400), chlorhexidine (569.05, 379.60,350), and Pollena Iodine-K (74033,727.60,750). Conclusion: The best fungicidal properties are characterized by the following disinfectants: Virkon, Disinfectant, Alkalit, chiorhexidine and Pollena Iodine-K.
