- Abstract
The disposal of both construction and demolition waste (CDW) generate negative environmental impacts as soil degradation, erosion, vegetation damage and loss of ecosystem services. Restoration processes aim to reclaim ecological integrity of degraded areas from physical, chemical and even biological perspectives. Then, the aim of this study was to characterize the chemical, physical and mineralogical properties of the CDW generated in Medellin city to determine its potential use in degraded soil bioremediation. The CDW X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy (plane polarized light) showed minerals such quartz, calcite, wallostonita, albite, anatase, actinolite. These minerals could improve degraded mining soil physical properties (aeration and infiltration) as well as provide essential nutrients (Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni) or beneficial to plants (Na, Si). The results suggest that CDW has a high potential to be used in bioremediation of degraded mining soils.
