- Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the relationship between crime and war in 15th-century Italy, with a focus on the recruitment of bandits as instruments of control in territories where the state had a weak presence. Through the stories of two bandits, the author develops a history of the social role of banditry in Medieval Italian wartime. It is the author's view that war represented an opportunity for bandits to profit from social instability, therefore their life were a conscious search of war.
