- Title
FINANCING THE AMERICAN NEWSPAPER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
- Authors
Schmalbeck, Richard
- Abstract
The article discusses the provision of financial assistance to American newspapers in the U.S. in the 21st century. It notes that the publication of newspapers suffers a secular decline in readership that leads to the decline in revenue from both advertising and circulation. It states that the declining revenue leads to desperate cost-cutting that leads to the decrease in quantity and quality of content. It reveals that several newspapers can able to cover their operating costs but they are likely to have difficulty attracting capital to improve their product. It adds newspapers have an immediacy that allows them better access to policy debates unlike magazines or books.
