The article reflects on questions of authority, dissent, and toleration faced by evangelical reformers. Topics discussed include the Protestant Reformation as a religious movement with far-reaching consequences for Europe and its global offshoots; its long-term impact especially on American history and culture; and German reformer Martin Luther's questions on the authority of his ecclesiastical and political superiors.
