The article discusses how teachers, activists, and intellectuals of the Yaeyama archipelago contested their specific modes of inclusion into the national community during the regions interwar period. Topics discussed include state agents having treated locals of Yaeyama like colonial subjects, and Yaeyama being celebrated as an invaluable repository of premodern Japanese customs, spirituality and music beginning in the 1920s.
