- Title
a platform chemical.
- Abstract
A research team from the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology has discovered a method for efficiently converting cellulose into enantiopure erythro-isocitric acid, a chiral isomer of citric acid. This discovery could have significant implications for chemical building blocks. Currently, citric acid is produced industrially using sugar, which competes with food production. However, the new production process allows for the sustainable and inexpensive production of isocitric acid from plant waste and residues, potentially making it cheaper than citric acid in the future.
