- Abstract
Invasive aquatic species have significant consequences for biodiversity, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These species, primarily introduced by human activities, disrupt delicate aquatic ecosystems by monopolizing resources and displacing native species. The main pathways for introduction are boat hulls, ballast water from ships, live bait used in recreational fishing, and escape or release from aquaculture or aquariums. These invasive species can have detrimental effects on native fauna and flora, alter food chains, and impact fishing and tourism industries. Prevention measures, such as reducing accidental introductions and implementing surveillance programs, are crucial to mitigate the negative effects of invasive species.
