- Title
THE TRANSITION FROM SOAPSTONE BOWLS TO MARCEY CREEK CERAMICS IN THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC REGION: VESSEL TECHNOLOGY, ETHNOGRAPHIC DATA, AND REGIONAL EXCHANGE.
- Authors
Klein, Michael J.
- Abstract
The technological attributes of soapstone bowls and Marcey Creek ceramics, ethnographic descriptions of the use of similar artifacts, and the widespread exchange of soapstone bowls suggest these artifacts were symbolically important vessels used during ritual gatherings and as prestigious exchange objects. With the collapse of the Southeastern exchange system, the benefits of expending the considerable labor involved in soapstone extraction and artifact manufacture waned. However, the behaviors associated with these vessels continued in importance. The brief existence of Marcey Creek Ceramics indicates that this attempt ultimately failed.
