- Title
The Malgré-nous: Conflicting Memories of a Second World War Drama.
- Authors
THATCHER, NICOLE
- Abstract
The article discusses the "Malgré-nous," men of the Alsace/Moselle region of France conscripted into the German army after Germany annexed the area during World War II. The wartime and postwar experiences of French citizens forced to fight for Germany are discussed, as are postwar public perceptions that they had been collaborationists or worse. Also discussed are autobiographical accounts of the episode by four Alsatians: René Bickel, Brigitte Bohn, Jean Jardiné, and Denise Lentz-Waegell. Finally, issues surrounding French public memory of the "Malgré-nous" up to the early 21st century are discussed.
