- Abstract
Topical minoxidil is a drug commonly prescribed as a treatment of different types of alopecias. Its mechanism of action is poorly understood; however, it is recognized that prolongs anagen phase, reduces telogen phase and increases the thickness of the miniaturized follicles; besides to intensifying the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and being a potassium channels regulator. Hypertrichosis is the increase of body hair above the normal variation of a population group, considering individuals of the same age, race and sex. It has been reported as a secondary side effect after the use of minoxidil in children. Possible causes are an increased systemic absorption and a greater sensitivity of the hair follicle to the concentration in which the drug is administered. This paper reports the case of an 8-year-old female with a diagnosis of hypertrichosis secondary to the use of topical minoxidil. The main treatment is the immediate suspension of the drug. Special caution should be exercised with the use of topical minoxidil in pediatric patients.
