- Abstract
Objetivo: Los autores examinaron hasta qué punto dos de las principales dimensiones de la personalidad (extraversión y neuroticismo) servían como índice del riesgo genético y ambiental de tres fobias (fobia social, agorafobia y fobia a los animales) en gemelos seleccionados a partir de un registro poblacional de gran tamaño. Método: Se evaluaron las fobias y los rasgos de la personalidad presentes a lo largo de la vida mediante una entrevista diagnóstica y un cuestionario autoadministrado, respectivamente, en 7.800 gemelos de pares mujer-mujer, varón-varón y de sexos opuestos. Se utilizaron modelos de ecuaciones trifactoriales de Cholesky limitados por sexo para descomponer las correlaciones entre la extraversión, el neuroticismo y cada fobia. Resultados: En los modelos con mejor ajuste, las correlaciones genéticas fueron moderadas y negativas entre la extraversión y la fobia social o la agorafobia, y fueron de cero entre la extraversión y la fobia a los animales. Las correlaciones genéticas fueron altas y positivas entre el neuroticismo y la fobia social o la agorafobia, y moderadas entre el neuroticismo y la fobia a los animales. Todos los factores de riesgo genético de la fobia social y la agorafobia fueron compartidos con todos aquellos que influyen en la extraversión y el neuroticismo; en cambio, sólo una proporción reducida de los factores de riesgo genéticos de la fobia a los animales (16 %) fue compartida con los que influyen en la personalidad. Las experiencias ambientales compartidas no fueron una fuente de correlaciones entre los rasgos de la personalidad y las fobias, y las correlaciones ambientales únicas fueron relativamente modestas. Conclusión: Los factores genéticos que influyen en la variación individual de la extraversión y el neuroticismo parecen explicar por completo el papel de la genética en la fobia social y la agorafobia, pero no en la fobia a los animales. Estos resultados destacan la importancia de la introversión (baja extraversión) y el neuroticismo en algunos trastornos psiquiátricos.
