- Abstract
The article discusses the social conditions of living in Raqqa, Syria under the rule of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) during Syria's Civil War, including under an extremist version of sharia law. The separatist groups fighting Syrian President Bashar al Assad, including the Free Syrian Army and the terrorist organization Jabhat al Nusra, is discussed. The role that the Raqqa police, or Hisba, played in punishing people for disobeying sharia law is discussed.
