- Abstract
The article presents the findings of a study on the purpose of literacy instruction in U.S. high school English classes. These findings include college preparation being the most distinct purpose for high-school English classes followed by a commitment to enjoyment of literacy activities and high school English teachers being deeply interested in the types of private and public individuals that their students will become.
